The Book Of Memory Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDAAEE FFGGHHIIJJ KKLLMNO PP QQIIRRSSAA

Turn me loose and let me beA
Young once more and fancy freeA
Let me wander where I willB
Down the lane and up the hillB
Trudging barefoot in the dustC
In an age that knows no 'must 'D
And no voice insistentlyA
Speaks of duty unto meA
Let me tread the happy waysE
Of those by gone yesterdaysE
-
Fame had never whispered thenF
Making slaves of eager menF
Greed had never called me downG
To the gray walls of the townG
Offering frankincense and myrrhH
If I'd be its prisonerH
I was free to come and goI
Where the cherry blossoms blowI
Free to wander where I wouldJ
Finding life supremely goodJ
-
But I turned as all must doK
From the happiness I knewK
To the land of care and strifeL
Seeking for a fuller lifeL
Heard the lure of fame and soughtM
That renown so dearly boughtN
Listened to the voice of greedO
Saying 'These the things you need '-
Now the gray town holds me fastP
Prisoner to the very lastP
-
Age has stamped me as its ownQ
Youth to younger hearts has flownQ
Still the cherry blossoms blowI
In the land loused to knowI
Still the fragrant clover spillsR
Perfume over dales and hillsR
But I'm not allowed to strayS
Where the young are free to playS
All the years will grant to meA
Is the book of memoryA
