Most every night when they're in bedB
And both their little prayers have saidB
They shout for me to come upstairsC
And tell them tales of gypsies boldD
And eagles with the claws that holdD
A baby's weight and fairy spritesC
That roam the woods on starry nightsC
-
And I must illustrate these talesC
Must imitate the northern galesC
That toss the Indian's canoeE
And show the way he paddles tooE
If in the story comes a bearF
I have to pause and sniff the airF
And show the way he climbs the treesC
To steal the honey from the beesC
-
And then I buzz like angry beesC
And sting him on his nose and kneesC
And howl in pain till mother criesC
'That pair will never shut their eyesC
While all that noise up there you makeG
You're simply keeping them awake '-
And then they whisper 'Just one more '-
And once again I'm forced to roarH
-
New stories every night they askI
And that is not an easy taskI
I have to be so many thingsC
The frog that croaks the lark that singsC
The cunning fox the frightened henJ
But just last night they stumped me whenJ
They wanted me to twist and squirmK
And imitate an angle wormK
-
At last they tumble off to sleepL
And softly from their room I creepL
And brush and comb the shock of hairF
I tossed about to be a bearF
Then mother says 'Well I should sayC
You're just as much a child as they '-
But you can bet I'll not resignM
That story telling job of mineM
