Purpose Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDFBB GHGHII JKJKFE

Not for the sake of the goldA
Not for the sake of the fameB
Not for the prize would I holdA
Any ambition or aimB
I would be brave and be trueC
Just for the good I can doC
-
I would be useful on earthD
Serving some purpose or causeE
Doing some labor of worthD
Giving no thought to applauseF
Thinking less of the gold or the fameB
Than the joy and the thrill of the gameB
-
Medals their brightness may loseG
Fame be forgotten or fadeH
Any reward we may chooseG
Leaves the account still unpaidH
But little real happiness liesI
In fighting alone for a prizeI
-
Give me the thrill of the taskJ
The joy of the battle and strifeK
Of being of use and I'll askJ
No greater reward from this lifeK
Better than fame or applauseF
Is striving to further a causeE
