Punishment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH ICICJKJK EAEALMLM

Their childhood is so brief that weA
Should hesitate to spoil their funB
We should be very slow to seeA
The things that they should not have doneB
For such a little while they playC
Before the rough long roads they treadD
We should be careful every dayC
To send no weeping child to bedD
-
So soon they'll women be and menE
With all the cares that grown ups knowF
We should be slow to punish whenE
Their little feet in mischief goF
Our whippings should be very fewG
Yes very few and very mildH
We should be careful what we doG
In dealing with a happy childH
-
So few the years that are their ownI
So brief the time to romp and playC
So very quickly are they grownI
To face the battles of the dayC
That we should hesitate to marJ
With punishment however slightK
The days that oh so precious areJ
And turn to grief a child's delightK
-
Too soon will come the long days whenE
They'll often heavy hearted beA
And they'll look back on childhood thenE
And think of you and think of meA
And we should have them then recallL
When we are sleeping in the graveM
Not how we punished children smallL
But how we kissed them and forgaveM
