Punishment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH ICICJKJK EAEALMLMTheir childhood is so brief that we | A |
Should hesitate to spoil their fun | B |
We should be very slow to see | A |
The things that they should not have done | B |
For such a little while they play | C |
Before the rough long roads they tread | D |
We should be careful every day | C |
To send no weeping child to bed | D |
- | |
So soon they'll women be and men | E |
With all the cares that grown ups know | F |
We should be slow to punish when | E |
Their little feet in mischief go | F |
Our whippings should be very few | G |
Yes very few and very mild | H |
We should be careful what we do | G |
In dealing with a happy child | H |
- | |
So few the years that are their own | I |
So brief the time to romp and play | C |
So very quickly are they grown | I |
To face the battles of the day | C |
That we should hesitate to mar | J |
With punishment however slight | K |
The days that oh so precious are | J |
And turn to grief a child's delight | K |
- | |
Too soon will come the long days when | E |
They'll often heavy hearted be | A |
And they'll look back on childhood then | E |
And think of you and think of me | A |
And we should have them then recall | L |
When we are sleeping in the grave | M |
Not how we punished children small | L |
But how we kissed them and forgave | M |
