Are woods an' fields an' runnin' brooks | A |
An' when the month o' May has done | B |
Her paintin' an' the mornin' sun | B |
Is lightin' just exactly right | C |
Each gorgeous scene for mortal sight | C |
I steal a day from toil an' go | D |
To see the springtime's picture show | D |

It's everywhere I choose to tread | E |
Perhaps I'll find a violet bed | E |
Half hidden by the larger scenes | F |
Or group of ferns or living greens | F |
So graceful an' so fine I swear | G |
That angels must have placed them there | G |
To beautify the lonely spot | H |
That mortal man would have forgot | H |

What hand can paint a picture book | I |
So marvelous as a runnin' brook | I |
It matters not what time o' day | J |
You visit it the sunbeams play | J |
Upon it just exactly right | C |
The mysteries of God to light | C |
No human brush could ever trace | K |
A droopin' willow with such grace | K |

Page after page new beauties rise | L |
To thrill with gladness an' surprise | L |
The soul of him who drops his care | G |
And seeks the woods to wander there | G |
Birds with the angel gift o' song | M |
Make music for him all day long | M |
An' nothin' that is base or mean | N |
Disturbs the grandeur of the scene | N |

There is no hint of hate or strife | O |
The woods display the joy of life | O |
An' answer with a silence fine | P |
The scoffer's jeer at power divine | P |
When doubt is high an' faith is low | D |
Back to the woods an' fields I go | D |
An' say to violet and tree | Q |
'No mortal hand has fashioned thee ' | - |
