People liked him not becauseA
He was rich or known to fameB
He had never won applauseA
As a star in any gameB
His was not a brilliant styleC
His was not a forceful wayD
But he had a gentle smileC
-
And a kindly word to sayD
Never arrogant or proudE
On he went with manner mildF
Never quarrelsome or loudE
Just as simple as a childF
Honest patient brave and trueG
Thus he lived from day to dayD
Doing what he found to doG
-
In a cheerful sort of wayD
Wasn't one to boast of goldH
Or belittle it with sneersI
Didn't change from hot to coldH
Kept his friends throughout the yearsI
Sort of man you like to meetJ
Any time or any placeK
There was always something sweetJ
-
And refreshing in his faceK
Sort of man you'd like to beL
Balanced well and truly squareM
Patient in adversityL
Generous when his skies were fairM
Never lied to friend or foeN
Never rash in word or deedO
Quick to come and slow to goN
In a neighbor's time of needO
-
Never rose to wealth or fameB
Simply lived and simply diedP
But the passing of his nameB
Left a sorrow far and wideP
Not for glory he'd attainedQ
Nor for what he had of pelfN
Were the friends that he had gainedQ
But for what he was himselfN
