Rhyme Scheme: ABCDDEFGGHH IIJJKKLLMMNN IIOOPPQQDDRR SSTTUUVVLLWWthey wore | A |
The winter caps that covered ears | B |
Are put away and no more tears | C |
Are shed because they cannot go | D |
Until they're bundled up just so | D |
No more she wonders when they're gone | E |
If they have put their rubbers on | F |
No longer are they hourly told | G |
To guard themselves against a cold | G |
Bareheaded now they romp and run | H |
Warmed only by the kindly sun | H |
- | |
She's put their heavy clothes away | I |
And turned the children out to play | I |
And all the morning long they race | J |
Like madcaps round about the place | J |
The robins on the fences sing | K |
A gayer song of welcoming | K |
And seems as though they had a share | L |
In all the fun they're having there | L |
The wrens and sparrows twitter too | M |
A louder and a noisier crew | M |
As though it pleased them all to see | N |
The youngsters out of doors and free | N |
- | |
Outdoors they scamper to their play | I |
With merry din the livelong day | I |
And hungrily they jostle in | O |
The favor of the maid to win | O |
Then armed with cookies or with cake | P |
Their way into the yard they make | P |
And every feathered playmate comes | Q |
To gather up his share of crumbs | Q |
The finest garden that I know | D |
Is one where little children grow | D |
Where cheeks turn brown and eyes are bright | R |
And all is laughter and delight | R |
- | |
Oh you may brag of gardens fine | S |
But let the children race in mine | S |
And let the roses white and red | T |
Make gay the ground whereon they tread | T |
And who for bloom perfection seeks | U |
Should mark the color on their cheeks | U |
No music that the robin spouts | V |
Is equal to their merry shouts | V |
There is no foliage to compare | L |
With youngsters' sun kissed tousled hair | L |
Spring's greatest joy beyond a doubt | W |
Is when it brings the children out | W |
