Memorial Day Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD EEFFGGHI BBJJGGEE GGBBKKLL

The finest tribute we can payA
Unto our hero dead to dayA
Is not a rose wreath white and redB
In memory of the blood they shedB
It is to stand beside each moundC
Each couch of consecrated groundC
And pledge ourselves as warriors trueD
Unto the work they died to doD
-
Into God's valleys where they lieE
At rest beneath the open skyE
Triumphant now o'er every foeF
As living tributes let us goF
No wreath of rose or immortellesG
Or spoken word or tolling bellsG
Will do to day unless we giveH
Our pledge that liberty shall liveI
-
Our hearts must be the roses redB
We place above our hero deadB
To day beside their graves we mustJ
Renew allegiance to their trustJ
Must bare our heads and humbly sayG
We hold the Flag as dear as theyG
And stand as once they stood to dieE
To keep the Stars and Stripes on highE
-
The finest tribute we can payG
Unto our hero dead to dayG
Is not of speech or roses redB
But living throbbing hearts insteadB
That shall renew the pledge they sealedK
With death upon the battlefieldK
That freedom's flag shall bear no stainL
And free men wear no tyrant's chainL
