Ma has a dandy little book that's full of narrow	A
slips	B
An' when she wants to pay a bill a page from	C
it she rips	B
She just writes in the dollars and the cents and	D
signs her name	E
An' that's as good as money though it doesn't	F
look the same	E
When she wants another bonnet or some	C
feathers for her neck	G
She promptly goes an' gets 'em an' she writes	H
another check	G
I don't just understand it but I know she	I
sputters when	J
Pa says to her at supper 'Well You're	K
overdrawn again '	L
	-
Ma's not a business woman she is much too	M
kind of heart	N
To squabble over pennies or to play a selfish	O
part	N
An' when someone asks for money she's not	P
one to stop an' think	Q
Of a little piece of paper an' the cost of pen	J
an' ink	Q
She just tells him very sweetly if he'll only	I
wait a bit	R
An' be seated in the parlor she will write a	S
check for it	R
She can write one out for twenty just as easily	I
as ten	J
An' forgets that Pa may grumble 'Well	I
you're overdrawn again '	-

Pa says it looks as though he'll have to start in	T
workin' nights	H
To gather in the money for the checks that	U
mother writes	H
He says that every morning when he's summoned	D
to the phone	V
He's afraid the bank is calling to make mother's	W
shortage known	V
He tells his friends if ever anything our fortune	X
wrecks	Y
They can trace it to the moment mother started	Z
writing checks	Y
He's got so that he trembles when he sees her	A2
fountain pen	J
An' he mutters 'Do be careful You'll be	I
overdrawn again '	-
