Ma has a dandy little book that's full of narrowA
slipsB
An' when she wants to pay a bill a page fromC
it she ripsB
She just writes in the dollars and the cents andD
signs her nameE
An' that's as good as money though it doesn'tF
look the sameE
When she wants another bonnet or someC
feathers for her neckG
She promptly goes an' gets 'em an' she writesH
another checkG
I don't just understand it but I know sheI
sputters whenJ
Pa says to her at supper 'Well You'reK
overdrawn again 'L
-
Ma's not a business woman she is much tooM
kind of heartN
To squabble over pennies or to play a selfishO
partN
An' when someone asks for money she's notP
one to stop an' thinkQ
Of a little piece of paper an' the cost of penJ
an' inkQ
She just tells him very sweetly if he'll onlyI
wait a bitR
An' be seated in the parlor she will write aS
check for itR
She can write one out for twenty just as easilyI
as tenJ
An' forgets that Pa may grumble 'WellI
you're overdrawn again '-
-
Pa says it looks as though he'll have to start inT
workin' nightsH
To gather in the money for the checks thatU
mother writesH
He says that every morning when he's summonedD
to the phoneV
He's afraid the bank is calling to make mother'sW
shortage knownV
He tells his friends if ever anything our fortuneX
wrecksY
They can trace it to the moment mother startedZ
writing checksY
He's got so that he trembles when he sees herA2
fountain penJ
An' he mutters 'Do be careful You'll beI
overdrawn again '-
