His Dog Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Pete bristles when the doorbell ringsA
Last night he didn't act the sameB
Dogs have a way of knowin' thingsA
An' when the dreaded cable cameB
He looked at mother an' he whinedC
His soft low sign of somethin' wrongD
As though he knew that we should findC
The news that we had feared so longD
-
He's followed me about the placeE
An' hasn't left my heels to dayC
He's rubbed his nose against my faceE
As if to kiss my grief awayC
There on his plate beside the doorF
You'll see untouched his mornin' mealG
I never understood beforeF
That dogs share every hurt you feelG
-
We've got the pride o' service fineH
As consolation for the blowI
We know by many a written lineH
He went the way he wished to goI
We know that God an' Country foundC
Our boy a servant brave an' trueJ
But Pete must sadly walk aroundC
An' miss the master that he knewJ
-
The mother's bearing up as wellK
As such a noble mother wouldC
The hurt I feel I needn't tellK
I guess by all it's understoodC
But Pete his dog that used to waitC
Each night to hear his cheery callL
An' romped about him at the gateC
Has felt the blow the worst of allL
