Growing Down Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE AGHGIJKJ LMNMAEOE PQRQSEOE

Time was I thought of growing upA
But that was ere the babies cameB
I'd dream and plan to be a manC
And win my share of wealth and fameB
For age held all the splendors thenD
And wisdom seemed lifes brightest crownE
For mortal brow It's different nowF
Each evening finds me growing downE
-
I'm not so keen for growing upA
To wrinkled cheek and heavy tongueG
And sluggish blood with little BudH
I long to be a comrade youngG
His sports are joys I want to shareI
His games are games I want to playJ
An old man grim's no chum for himK
And so I'm growing down to dayJ
-
I'm back to marbles and to topsL
To flying kites and one ol' catM
'Fan acres ' I now loudly cryN
I also take my turn at batM
I've had my fling at growing upA
And want no old man's fair renownE
To be a boy is finer joyO
And so I've started growing downE
-
Once more I'm learning games I knewP
When I was four and five and sixQ
I'm going back along life's trackR
To find the same old fashioned tricksQ
And happy are the hours we spendS
Together without sigh or frownE
To be a boy is Age's joyO
And so to him I'm growing downE
