Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCBC BBBBDEDE FCFCGHGH IJIJKAKAO SAD and solemn holy day | A |
O bitterest of bitter hours | B |
Behold He staggers on His way | A |
Beneath the cross that saps His powers | B |
O see they goad Him with their thongs | B |
And mock Him as He falters there | C |
For us for us He bears these wrongs | B |
And goes the crown of thorns to wear | C |
- | |
No word of bitterness He speaks | B |
No look of hatred mars His face | B |
The scoffers spit upon His cheeks | B |
And taunt Him in the market place | B |
And now upon the cross He 's nailed | D |
'I thirst ' He mutters that is all | E |
But still He is to be assailed | D |
His lips must taste the cup of gall | E |
- | |
Once more His lips are seen to move | F |
O holy sentence uttered there | C |
What more His love could better prove | F |
Than these few words borne on the air | C |
'Father forgive them ' thus He prayed | G |
And doubt you that His love was true | H |
Still patient gentle unafraid | G |
'Forgive they know not what they do | H |
- | |
For us the crown of thorns He wore | I |
With patience man has never known | J |
For us the cruel cross He bore | I |
With meekness man has never shown | J |
For us He lived for us He died | K |
O sad and solemn holy day | A |
Renouncing self and earthly pride | K |
That we might know the better way | A |
