Good Friday Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCBC BBBBDEDE FCFCGHGH IJIJKAKA

O SAD and solemn holy dayA
O bitterest of bitter hoursB
Behold He staggers on His wayA
Beneath the cross that saps His powersB
O see they goad Him with their thongsB
And mock Him as He falters thereC
For us for us He bears these wrongsB
And goes the crown of thorns to wearC
-
No word of bitterness He speaksB
No look of hatred mars His faceB
The scoffers spit upon His cheeksB
And taunt Him in the market placeB
And now upon the cross He 's nailedD
'I thirst ' He mutters that is allE
But still He is to be assailedD
His lips must taste the cup of gallE
-
Once more His lips are seen to moveF
O holy sentence uttered thereC
What more His love could better proveF
Than these few words borne on the airC
'Father forgive them ' thus He prayedG
And doubt you that His love was trueH
Still patient gentle unafraidG
'Forgive they know not what they doH
-
For us the crown of thorns He woreI
With patience man has never knownJ
For us the cruel cross He boreI
With meekness man has never shownJ
For us He lived for us He diedK
O sad and solemn holy dayA
Renouncing self and earthly prideK
That we might know the better wayA
