My Pa says that he used to beA
A bright boy in geographyA
An' when he went to school he knewB
The rivers an' the mountains tooB
An' all the capitals of statesC
An' bound'ry lines an' all the datesC
They joined the union But last nightD
When I was studyin' to reciteD
I asked him if he would explainE
The leading industries of MaineE
He thought an' thought an' thought a lotF
An' said 'I knew but I've forgot 'G
My Pa says when he was in schoolH
He got a hundred as a ruleH
An' grammar was a thing he knewB
Becoz he paid attention toB
His teacher an' he learned the wayI
To write good English an' to sayI
The proper things an' I should beA
As good a boy in school as heA
But once I asked him could he giveJ
Me help with the infinitiveJ
He scratched his head and said 'Great ScottF
I used to know but I've forgotF
My Pa says when he was a boyK
Arithmetic was just a toyK
He learned his tables mighty fastL
An' every term he always passedL
An' had good marks an' teachers saidM
'That youngster surely has a head 'G
But just the same I notice nowN
Most every time I ask him howN
To find the common multipleO
He says 'That's most unusualO
Once I'd have told you on the spotF
But somehow sonny I've forgot 'G
I'm tellin' you just what is whatP
My Pa's forgot an awful lotF
