For Others-and His Wife Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCCB DBDBEEEB FBFBGGGB

HE took off his hat to the woman next doorA
But he wouldn't do that for his wifeB
He picked up the handkerchief dropped Jon the floorA
But he wouldn't do that for his wifeB
He ran for a chair when a fair maiden stoodC
Did everything that a gentleman shouldC
When leaving he helped her get into her hoodC
But he wouldn't do that for his wifeB
-
He offered his arm to the fair Mrs BrownD
But he wouldn't do that for his wifeB
He gallantly carried her parcels from townD
But he wouldn't do that for his wifeB
He helped her alight from the trolley car thenE
Didn't stand on the platform to smoke with the menE
But sat down beside her I'll say it againE
That he wouldn't do that for his wifeB
-
If it 'a proper these little attentions to payF
Then he ought to pay them to his wifeB
No man is polite let me venture to sayF
If he isn't polite to his wifeB
Fair woman deserves all our courtesies trueG
And enough for her no man is able to doG
But the man who's a gentleman right through and throughG
Is a gentleman first to his wifeB
