Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDBEB FGHHGIJKJ LMNMOPQQP CPRPSPTP ABUBDBNNBWe was speakin' of folks jes' common folks | A |
An' we come to this conclusion | B |
That wherever they be on land or sea | C |
They warm to a home allusion | B |
That under the skin an' under the hide | D |
There's a spark that starts a glowin' | B |
Whenever they look at a scene or book | E |
That something of home is showin' | B |
- | |
They may differ in creeds an' politics | F |
They may argue an' even quarrel | G |
But their throats grip tight | H |
If they catch a sight | H |
Of their favorite elm or laurel | G |
An' the winding lane that they used to tread | I |
With never a care to fret 'em | J |
Or the pasture gate where they used to wait | K |
Right under the skin will get 'em | J |
- | |
Now folks is folks on their different ways | L |
With their different griefs an' pleasures | M |
But the home they knew when their years were few | N |
Is the dearest of all their treasures | M |
An' the richest man to the poorest waif | O |
Right under the skin is brother | P |
When they stand an' sigh | Q |
With a tear dimmed eye | Q |
At a thought of the dear old mother | P |
- | |
It makes no difference where it may be | C |
Nor the fortunes that years may alter | P |
Be they simple or wise the old home ties | R |
Make all of 'em often falter | P |
Time may robe 'em in sackcloth coarse | S |
Or garb 'em in gorgeous splendor | P |
But whatever their lot they keep one spot | T |
Down deep that is sweet an' tender | P |
- | |
We was speakin' of folks jes' common folks | A |
An' we come to this conclusion | B |
That one an' all be they great or small | U |
Will warm to a home allusion | B |
That under the skin an' the beaten hide | D |
They're kin in a real affection | B |
For the joys they knew | N |
When their years were few | N |
An' the home of their recollection | B |
