Care-free Youth Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGFHIJI KLMLNOMOPCQC RSTSUCVCWXYX EHZHA2TB2TB2C2SC2The skies are blue and the sun is out | A |
and the grass is green and soft | B |
And the old charm's back in the apple tree | C |
and it calls a boy aloft | D |
And the same low voice that the old don't hear | E |
but the care free youngsters do | F |
Is calling them to the fields and streams | G |
and the joys that once I knew | F |
And if youth be wild desire for play | H |
and care is the mark of men | I |
Beneath the skin that Time has tanned | J |
I'm a madcap youngster then | I |
- | |
Far richer than king with his crown of gold | K |
and his heavy weight of care | L |
Is the sunburned boy with his stone bruised feet | M |
and his tousled shock of hair | L |
For the king can hear but the cry of hate | N |
or the sickly sound of praise | O |
And lost to him are the voices sweet | M |
that called in his boyhood days | O |
Far better than ruler with pomp and power | P |
and riches is it to be | C |
The urchin gay in his tattered clothes | Q |
that is climbing the apple tree | C |
- | |
Oh once I heard all the calls that come | R |
to the quick glad ears of boys | S |
And a certain spot on the river bank | T |
told me of its many joys | S |
And certain fields and certain trees | U |
were loyal friends to me | C |
And I knew the birds and I owned a dog | V |
and we both could hear and see | C |
Oh never from tongues of men have dropped | W |
such messages wholly glad | X |
As the things that live in the great outdoors | Y |
once told to a little lad | X |
- | |
And I'm sorry for him who cannot hear | E |
what the tall trees have to say | H |
Who is deaf to the call of a running stream | Z |
and the lanes that lead to play | H |
The boy that shins up the faithful elm | A2 |
or sprawls on a river bank | T |
Is more richly blessed with the joys of life | B2 |
than any old man of rank | T |
For youth is the golden time of life | B2 |
and this battered old heart of mine | C2 |
Beats fast to the march of its old time joys | S |
when the sun begins to shine | C2 |
