Where abide the friendly men | A |
Glad to see the same old scenes | B |
And the little house that means | B |
All the joys the soul has treasured | C |
Glad to be where smiles aren't measured | C |
Where I've blended with the gladness | B |
All the heart has known of sadness | B |
Where some long familiar steeple | D |
Marks my town of friendly people | D |

Though it's fun to go a straying | E |
Where the bands are nightly playing | E |
And the throngs of men and women | F |
Drain the cup of pleasure brimmin' | F |
I am glad when it is over | G |
That I've ceased to play the Rover | G |
And when once the train starts chugging | E |
Towards the children I'll be hugging | E |
All my thoughts and dreams are set there | H |
Fast enough I cannot get there | H |

Guess I wasn't meant for bright lights | B |
For the blaze of red and white lights | B |
For the throngs that seem to smother | G |
In their selfishness each other | G |
For whenever I've been down there | H |
Tramped the noisy blatant town there | H |
Always in a week I've started | I |
Yearning hungering heavy hearted | I |
For the home town and its spaces | B |
Lit by fine and friendly faces | B |

Like to be where men about me | J |
Do not look on me to doubt me | J |
Where I know the men and women | F |
Know why tears some eyes are dimmin' | F |
Know the good folks an' the bad folks | B |

Where we live with one another | G |
Meanin' something to each other | G |
An' I'm glad to see the steeple | D |
Where the crowds aren't merely people | D |
