'Twas not enough to cleanse his feetB
Of dirt they'd gathered in the streetB
He stood and dusted off his mindC
And left all trace of care behindC
'In here I will not take ' said heD
'The stains the day has brought to meD
-
'Beyond this door shall never goE
The burdens that are mine to knowE
The day is done and here I leaveF
The petty things that vex and grieveF
What clings to me of hate and sinG
To them I will not carry inG
Only the good shall go with meD
For their devoted eyes to seeD
-
'I will not burden them with caresH
Nor track the home with grim affairsH
I will not at my table sitI
With soul unclean and mind unfitI
Beyond this door I will not takeJ
The outward signs of inward acheJ
I will not take a dreary mindC
Into this house for them to find '-
-
He wiped his shoes before his doorA
But paused to do a little moreA
He dusted off the stains of strifeK
The mud that's incident to lifeK
The blemishes of careless thoughtL
The traces of the fight he'd foughtL
The selfish humors and the meanM
And when he entered he was cleanM
