Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEE FFGGHHIIJJ KKLLMMCCAA NNOOPPQQCC RRSSQQQQGGGod has been good to men He gave | A |
His Only Son their souls to save | A |
And then he made a second gift | B |
Which from their dreary lives should lift | B |
The tyrant's yoke and set them free | C |
From all who'd throttle liberty | C |
He gave America to men | D |
Fashioned this land we love and then | D |
Deep in her forests sowed the seed | E |
Which was to serve man's earthly need | E |
- | |
When wisps of smoke first upwards curled | F |
From pilgrim fires upon the world | F |
Unnoticed and unseen began | G |
God's second work of grace for man | G |
Here where the savage roamed and fought | H |
God sowed the seed of nobler thought | H |
Here to the land we love to claim | I |
The pioneers of freedom came | I |
Here has been cradled all that's best | J |
In every human mind and breast | J |
- | |
For full four hundred years and more | K |
Our land has stretched her welcoming shore | K |
To weary feet from soils afar | L |
Soul shackled serfs of king and czar | L |
Have journeyed here and toiled and sung | M |
And talked of freedom to their young | M |
And God above has smiled to see | C |
This precious work of liberty | C |
And watched this second gift He gave | A |
The dreary lives of men to save | A |
- | |
And now when liberty's at bay | N |
And blood stained tyrants force the fray | N |
Worn warriors battling for the right | O |
Crushed by oppression's cruel might | O |
Hear in the dark through which they grope | P |
America's glad cry of hope | P |
Man's liberty is not to die | Q |
America is standing by | Q |
World wide shall human lives be free | C |
America has crossed the sea | C |
- | |
America the land we love | R |
God's second gift from Heaven above | R |
Builded and fashioned out of truth | S |
Sinewed by Him with splendid youth | S |
For that glad day when shall be furled | Q |
All tyrant flags throughout the world | Q |
For this our banner holds the sky | Q |
That liberty shall never die | Q |
For this America began | G |
To make a brotherhood of man | G |
