What do I want my boy to beA
Oft is the question asked of meA
And oft I ask it of myselfB
What corner niche or post or shelfB
In the great hall of life would IC
Select for him to occupyC
Statesman or writer poet sageD
Or toiler for a weekly wageD
Artist or artisan Oh whatE
Is to become his future lotF
For him I do not dare to planG
I only hope he'll be a manG
-
I leave it free for him to chooseH
The tools of life which he shall useI
Brush pen or chisel lathe or wrenchJ
The desk of commerce or the benchJ
And pray that when he makes his choiceK
In each day's task he shall rejoiceK
I know somewhere there is a needL
For him to labor and succeedL
Somewhere if he be clean and trueM
Loyal and honest through and throughM
He shall be fit for any clanG
And so I hope he'll be a manG
-
I would not build my hope or askN
That he shall do some certain taskN
Or bend his will to suit my ownO
He shall select his post aloneO
Life needs a thousand kinds of menP
Toilers and masters of the penP
Doctors mechanics sturdy handsQ
To do the work which it commandsQ
And wheresoe'er he's pleased to goR
Honor and triumph he may knowR
Therefore I must do all I canG
To teach my boy to be a manG
