Expect me to put grief away | A |
Because I am a man and rough | B |
And sometimes short of speech and gruff | B |
The women folks at home believe | C |
His absence doesn't make me grieve | C |
But how I felt they little know | D |
The day I smiled and let him go | D |
- | |
They little know the dreams I had | E |
Long cherished for my sturdy lad | E |
They little guess the wrench it meant | F |
That day when off to war he went | F |
They little know the tears I checked | G |
While standing smiling and erect | G |
They never heard my smothered sigh | H |
When it was time to say good bye | H |
- | |
'What does his father think and say ' | - |
The neighbors ask from day to day | A |
'Oh he's a man ' they answer then | I |
'And you know how it is with men | I |
But little do they ever say | A |
They do not feel the self same way | A |
He seems indifferent and grim | J |
And yet he's very proud of him ' | - |
- | |
Indifferent and grim Oh heart | K |
Be brave enough to play the part | K |
Let not the grief in you be shown | L |
Keep all your loneliness unknown | L |
To you the women folks must turn | M |
For comfort when their sorrows burn | M |
You must not at this time reveal | N |
The pain and anguish that you feel | N |
- | |
Oh tongue be silent through the years | O |
And eyes keep back always the tears | P |
And let them never see or know | D |
My hidden weight of grief and woe | D |
Though every golden dream I had | E |
Was centered in my little lad | E |
Alone my sorrow I must bear | Q |
They must not know how much I care | Q |
- | |
Though women folks may talk and weep | R |
A man unseen his grief must keep | R |
And hide behind his smile and pride | S |
The loneliness that dwells inside | S |
And so from day to day I go | D |
Playing the part of man although | D |
Beneath the rough outside and grim | J |
I think and dream and pray for him | J |
