Because I am his father theyA
Expect me to put grief awayA
Because I am a man and roughB
And sometimes short of speech and gruffB
The women folks at home believeC
His absence doesn't make me grieveC
But how I felt they little knowD
The day I smiled and let him goD
-
They little know the dreams I hadE
Long cherished for my sturdy ladE
They little guess the wrench it meantF
That day when off to war he wentF
They little know the tears I checkedG
While standing smiling and erectG
They never heard my smothered sighH
When it was time to say good byeH
-
'What does his father think and say '-
The neighbors ask from day to dayA
'Oh he's a man ' they answer thenI
'And you know how it is with menI
But little do they ever sayA
They do not feel the self same wayA
He seems indifferent and grimJ
And yet he's very proud of him '-
-
Indifferent and grim Oh heartK
Be brave enough to play the partK
Let not the grief in you be shownL
Keep all your loneliness unknownL
To you the women folks must turnM
For comfort when their sorrows burnM
You must not at this time revealN
The pain and anguish that you feelN
-
Oh tongue be silent through the yearsO
And eyes keep back always the tearsP
And let them never see or knowD
My hidden weight of grief and woeD
Though every golden dream I hadE
Was centered in my little ladE
Alone my sorrow I must bearQ
They must not know how much I careQ
-
Though women folks may talk and weepR
A man unseen his grief must keepR
And hide behind his smile and prideS
The loneliness that dwells insideS
And so from day to day I goD
Playing the part of man althoughD
Beneath the rough outside and grimJ
I think and dream and pray for himJ
