She is free of the trap and the paddleA
The portage and the trailB
But something behind her savage lifeC
Shines like a fragile veilB
-
Her dreams are undiscoveredD
Shadows trouble her breastE
When the time for resting comethF
Then least is she at restE
-
Oft in the morns of winterG
When she visits the rabbit snaresH
An appearance floats in the crystal airI
Beyond the balsam firsJ
-
Oft in the summer morningsK
When she strips the nets of fishL
The smell of the dripping net twineM
Gives to her heart a wishL
-
But she cannot learn the meaningN
Of the shadows in her soulO
The lights that break and gatherG
The clouds that part and rollO
-
The reek of rock built citiesP
Where her fathers dwelt of yoreQ
The gleam of loch and shealingN
The mist on the moorR
-
Frail traces of kindred kindnessS
Of feud by hill and strandT
The heritage of an age long lifeC
In a legendary landT
-
She wakes in the stifling wigwamU
Where the air is heavy and wildV
She fears for something or nothingN
With the heart of a frightened childV
-
She sees the stars turn slowlyW
Past the tangle of the polesX
Through the smoke of the dying embersJ
Like the eyes of dead soulsX
-
Her heart is shaken with longingN
For the strange still yearsY
For what she knows and knows notZ
For the wells of ancient tearsH
-
A voice calls from the rapidsA2
Deep careless and freeW
A voice that is larger than her lifeC
Or than her death shall beW
-
She covers her face with her blanketB2
Her fierce soul hates her breathC2
As it cries with a sudden passionD2
For life or deathC2
