At Bethlehem upon the hillA
The day was done the night was nighB
The dusk was deep and had its willA
The stars were very small and stillA
Like unblown tapers faint and highB
-
The noises had begun to fallC
And quiet stole upon the placeD
The howl of dogs along the wallC
Voices that from the houstops callC
And answer and the graceD
-
Of some low breath of even songE
Grew faint apace between the rocksF
In misty pastures and alongE
The dim hillside with crook and thongE
The lonely shepherds watched their flocksF
-
The Inn master within the InnG
Called loudly out after this sortH
'Draw no more water cease the dinG
Pile the loose fodder and beginG
To turn the mules out of the courtH
-
The time has come to shut the gateI
Make way ' he cried and then beganJ
To sweep and set the litter straightI
And pile the saddle bags and freightI
Of some belated caravanJ
-
The drivers whirled their beasts aboutK
And beat them on with shoutings greatI
The nosebags slipped the feed flew outK
The water buckets reeled the routK
Went jostling onward to the gateI
-
Came one unto the master thenL
Hasting to find him through the gloomM
'Give us a place to rest ' and whenL
He spake the master cried againL
'There is no room there is no room '-
-
'But I have come from NazarethN
Full three days' toil to Bethlehem'M
'What matters that ' the master saithN
'For here is hardly room for breathN
The guests curse me for crowding them '-
-
'Hold Sir leave me not so I pray'O
He plucked him sudden by the sleeveP
'My wife is with me and doth sayQ
Her hour hath come I beg you stayQ
And make some plan for her relief '-
-
'Two hours ago you might have hadR
The chamber wherein stands the loomM
But then to drive me wholly madR
Came this great merchant from BaghdadR
And thrust himself into the roomM
-
'There is no other shelf to callC
A bed But just beyond the gateI
You may find shelter in a stallC
If there be shelter left at allC
You may be even now too late '-
-
Beyond the gate within the nightS
A figure rested on the groundT
About her all the rout took flightS
The dizzy noise the flashing lightS
The mules were tramping all aroundT
-
Leaning in mute expectancyU
Beneath a stunted sycamoreO
She added darkness utterlyU
To the dim light the shrouded treeU
By her hands held her face beforeO
-
And yet to mock her eye's desireO
The cavern into which she staredV
Was lit with disks and lines of fireO
When triple darkness did conspireO
The secret founts of light were baredV
-
And all the wheeling fire was rifeW
With haunting fears her broken breathN
Grew short with this prophetic strifeW
What was for one the dawn of lifeW
Would be for one the dawn of deathN
-
Meantime the stranger with a lampX
Which lit the darkness small and wanY
Searched where the mules did tramp and stampX
Amid the litter and the dampX
For some small place to rest uponY
-
And there against the furthest wallC
Where the black shade was dense and deepZ
He found a mean and meager stallC
But there when the weak light did fallC
He found a little lad asleepZ
-
He lifted up his childish headA2
And smiled serenely at the lightS
'And have you found him then ' he saidA2
'My brother who I thought was deadA2
I lost him in the crowd last nightS
-
'His name is Ezra and he isB2
So tall and strong that when I tryO
Standing on tiptoe for a kissC2
I could not reach except for thisC2
He lifts me up so easilyU
-
'I had two little doves to takeD2
Up to the booths' he held his breathN
'Peace child and for your mother's sakeD2
Yield me this place nay nay awakeD2
My weary wife is sick to death '-
-
'I will ' the little lad repliedE2
'I promised never to forgetF2
My mother years ago she diedE2
I will lie out on the hillsideE2
And I may find dear Ezra yet '-
-
And now she drooped her weary headA2
Within that comfortless mangerO
It might have been a palace bedA2
With canopy of gold insteadA2
So little did she know or careO
-
Gentle Jesus slumber mildG2
Lullaby lullabyO
Succored by a little childG2
Lull lullabyO
-
You of children are the kingH2
Lullaby lullabyO
Sovereign to all ministeringH2
Lull lullabyO
-
Grace you bring them from aboveI2
Lullaby lullabyO
They give promise lisping loveI2
Lull lullabyO
-
And out upon the darkened hillA
With all the quiet pastured sheepZ
Charmed by the falling of a rillA
Where in the pool it cadenced stillA
The little lad was fallen asleepZ
-
All his young dreams were robed with powerO
And glad were all his vision folkJ2
He wandered on from hour to hourO
With Ezra happy as a flowerO
That blooms safe shadowed by the oakJ2
-
But once before his dreams were toldK2
He thought he saw within the deepZ
Vault of the sky a rose unfoldK2
Made all of fire and lovely goldK2
Whose petals seemed to glow and leapZ
-
As if each dewy crystal cellL2
Were a great angel live with lightS
And trembling to the coronalL2
Merging in sheen of pearl and shellL2
With his great comrade equal brightS
-
Until the petals flashed and sprangM2
And folded to the central heartN2
Music there was that showered and rangM2
As if each angel harped and sangM2
Controlled by some celestial artN2
-
The child saw splendor without nameM
And turned and smiled and all the noiseO2
Of strings and singing sank it cameM
Faint and dream altered yet the sameM
Soft tempered to his mother's voiceP2
-
Slumber slumber gentle childG2
Lullaby lullabyO
Sweet as henna dear and mildG2
Lull lullabyO
-
You the first of all the raceD
Lullaby lullabyO
Gave your master early graceD
Lull lullabyO
-
Gave a shelter for his headA2
Lullaby lullabyO
Took the chilly earth insteadA2
Lull lullabyO
-
Now take comfort infant earthN
Lullaby lullabyO
Jesus Christ is come to birthN
Lull lullabyO
-
For his principalityU
Lullaby lullabyO
Children cluster at his kneeU
Lull lullabyO
-
Hail the heaven happy ageQ2
Lullaby lullabyO
Love begins his pilgrimageR2
Lull lullabyO
