Heaven help your home to nightA
MacCormac for I knowB
A white witch woman is your brideC
You married for your woeB
-
You thought her but a simple maidD
That roamed the mountain sideC
She put the witch's glance on youE
And so became your brideC
-
But I have watched her close and longF
And know her all too wellG
I never churned before her glanceH
But evil luck befellG
-
Last week the cow beneath my handI
Gave out no milk at allJ
I turned and saw the pale haired girlK
Lean laughing by the wallJ
-
A little sup she cried for meL
The day is hot and dryM
Begone I said you witch's childN
She laughed a loud good byeM
-
And when the butter in the churnO
Will never rise I seeL
Beside the door the white witch girlK
Has got her eyes on meL
-
At dawn to day I met her outP
Upon the mountain sideC
And all her slender finger tipsQ
Were each a crimson dyedC
-
Now I had gone to seek a lambR
The darkness sent astrayS
Sore for a lamb the dawning windsT
And sharp beaked birds of preyS
-
But when I saw the white witch maidD
With blood upon her gownU
I said I'm poorer by a lambR
The witch has dragged it downU
-
And Why is this your hands so redV
All in the early dayS
I seized her by the shoulder fairW
She pulled herself awayS
-
It is the raddle on my handsX
The raddle all so redV
For I have marked MacCormac's sheepY
And little lambs she saidV
-
And what is this upon your mouthZ
And on your cheek so whiteA
Oh it is but the berries' stainA2
She trembled in her frightA
-
I swear it is no berries' stainA2
Nor raddle all so redV
I laid my hands about her throatB2
She shook me off and fledV
-
I had not gone to follow herC2
A step upon the wayS
When came I to my own lost lambR
That dead and bloody layS
-
Come back I cried you witch's childN
Come back and answer meL
But no maid on the mountain sideC
Could ever my eyes seeL
-
I looked into the glowing eastD2
I looked into the southZ
But did not see the slim young witchE2
With crimson on her mouthZ
-
Now though I looked both well and longF
And saw no woman thereW
Out from the bushes by my sideC
There crept a snow white hareW
-
With knife in hand I followed itF2
By ditch by bog by hillG2
I said Your luck be in your feetH2
For I shall do you illG2
-
I said Come be you fox or hareW
Or be you mountain maidD
I'll cut the witch's heart from youE
For mischief you have madeD
-
She laid her spells upon my pathI2
The brambles held and toreJ2
The pebbles slipped beneath my feetH2
The briars wounded soreJ2
-
And then she vanished from my eyesK2
Beside MacCormac's farmL2
I ran to catch her in the houseM2
And keep the man from harmL2
-
She stood with him beside the fireC2
And when she saw my knifeN2
She flung herself upon his breastO2
And prayed he'd save her lifeN2
-
The woman is a witch I criedC
So cast her off from youE
She'll be my wife to day he saidV
Be careful what you doE
-
The woman is a witch I saidV
He laughed both loud and longF
She laid her arms about his neckP2
Her laugh was like a songF
-
The woman is a witch he mockedQ2
And laughed both long and loudR2
She bent her head upon his breastO2
Her hair was like a cloudR2
-
I said See blood upon her mouthZ
And on each finger tipS2
He said I see a pretty maidD
A rose upon her lipS2
-
He took her slender hand in hisT2
To kiss the stain awayS
Oh well she cast her spell on himU2
What could I do but prayS
-
May heaven guard your house to nightA
I whisper as I goB
For you have won a witch for brideC
And married for your woeB
