Who was stealing the Baron's wineA
Golden sherry and port so oldB
Precious I wot as drops of goldB
Lone to night he came to dineA
-
Flung himself in his oaken chairC
Kicked the hound that whined for breadD
God the thief shall swing he saidD
Thrust his hand through his ruffled hairC
-
Bolt and bar and double chainE
Held secure the cellar doorF
And the watchman placed beforeF
Kept a faithful watch in vainE
-
Every day the story cameG
Master come I hear it dripH
The wine is wet on the robber's lipH
Who the robber none could nameG
-
All the folk in County ClareC
Found a task for every dayI
By the Baron's gate to strayI
Came to gossip stayed to stareC
-
Nothing here to satisfyJ
Souls for tragedy awakeK
Just the castle by the lakeK
Calmest spot beneath the skyJ
-
But the whispered story grewL
When the Baron went to dineA
That a devil shared his wineA
Had his soul in danger tooL
-
Every morn the Baron roseM
More morose and full of ageN
Passed the day in sullen rageN
Barred his gates on friends or foesM
-
Lone to night he came to dineA
Struck the hound that asked a shareC
Heard a step upon the stairC
Come the thief is at your wineA
-
Baron of Killowen keepO
Running down the vaulted wayI
To the cellar dark by dayI
Took the ten steps at a leapO
-
There he listened with the throngP
Of frighted servants at the doorF
He heard the wine drip on the floorF
And sea mew's laughter loud and longP
-
Of oaken beam of bolt and chainE
They freed the door and crowded throughL
Their eyes a horror claimed in vainE
Nor ghost nor devil met their viewL
-
They searched behind the hogshead whereC
The watchful spider spied and spanQ
They sighed to see the wine that ranQ
A crimson torrent wasting thereC
-
They even searched the gloomy wellR
That legend said rose from the lakeK
They saw bright bubbles rise and breakK
But nothing stranger here befellR
-
The Baron cursed the Baron saidD
Now all be gone alone I'll stayI
There shall not rise another dayI
Without this thief alive or deadD
-
So still he stood no sound was thereC
But just the wine went drop and dripH
Save that the silence seemed to slipH
Its threatening fingers through his hairC
-
And then as last an echo flewL
The splash of waters thrown apartS
He cursed the beating of his heartS
Because the thief was listening tooL
-
The slipping scrape of scales he hearsT
And sea mew laughter loud and sweetU
He dares not move his frightened feetU
His pulse beats with a thousand fearsV
-
At that strange monster in the gloomW
He points his pistol quick and firesX
Before the powder spark expiresX
He hears a sea bird's scream of doomW
-
He saw one gleam of foam white armsY
Of sea green eyes of sloak brown hairC
He had a glance to find her fairC
When he had slain her thousand charmsY
-
-
-
The Baron of Killowen slewL
A strange sea maiden young and fairC
And all the folk in county ClareC
Will tell you that the tale is trueL
-
And when the Baron came to dineA
His guests could never understandZ
That he should say with glass in handZ
I would the thief were at my wineA
