The Old Maid Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE DGHI AJDJ AKLK MNON PLQL MRSR PBOB AKLK

She walks in a lonely gardenA
On the path her feet have madeB
With high heeled shoes gold buckledC
And gown of a flowered brocadeB
-
The hair that falls on her shouldersD
Half held with a ribbon tieE
Once glowed like the wheat in autumnF
Now grey as a winter skyE
-
Time on her brow with rough fingersD
Writes his record of smiles and tearsG
And her mind like a golden timepieceH
He stopped in the long past yearsI
-
At the foot of the lonely gardenA
When she comes to the trysting placeJ
She knew of old there she lingersD
With a blush on her withered faceJ
-
The children out on the commonA
They climb to the garden wallK
And laugh He will come to morrowL
Who never will come at allK
-
And often over our sewingM
As I and my neighbour sitN
To gossip over this storyO
That has never an end to itN
-
He is dead I would say that loverP
Who left her so long agoL
But my neighbour would rest her needleQ
To answer He's false I knowL
-
For could it be he were sleepingM
With a love that was such as thisR
He'd have burst through the gates of silenceS
And flown to meet her kissR
-
Is she best with tears or laughterP
This dame in her old brocadeB
My neighbour says she is holyO
With a faith that will not fadeB
-
-
-
But the children out on the commonA
They answer her dreary callK
And say He will come to morrowL
Who never will come at allK
