Who knocks at the Geraldine's door to nightA
In the black storm and the rainB
With the thunder crash and the shrieking windC
Comes the moan of a creature's painB
-
And once they knocked yet never a stirD
To show that the Geraldine knewE
And twice they knocked yet never a boltF
The listening Geraldine drewE
-
And thrice they knocked ere he moved his chairG
And said Whoever it beH
I dare not open the door to nightA
For a fear that has come to meH
-
Three times he rises from out his chairG
And three times he sits him downI
Now what has made faint this heart of mineJ
He says with a growing frownI
-
Now what has made me a coward to nightA
Who never knew fear beforeK
But I swear that the hand of a little childL
Keeps pulling me from the doorK
-
The Geraldine rose from his chair at lastM
And opened the door full wideN
Whoever is out in the storm said heH
May in God's name come insideN
-
He who was out in the storm and rainB
Drew back at the Geraldine's callO
Now who comes not in the Holy NameP
Will never come in at allO
-
He looked to the right he looked to the leftQ
And never a one saw heH
But right in his path lay a coal black houndR
A moaning right piteouslyO
-
Come in he cried you little black houndR
Come in I will ease your painB
My roof shall keep you to night at leastS
From the leash of wind and rainB
-
The Geraldine took up the little black houndR
And put him down by the fireD
So sleep you there poor wandering oneT
As long as your heart desireD
-
The Geraldine tossed on his bed that nightA
And never asleep went heH
For the crowing of his little red cockU
That did crow most woefullyH
-
For the howling of his own wolf houndR
That cried at the gate all nightA
He rose and went to the banquet hallO
At the first of morning lightA
-
He looked to the right he looked to the leftQ
At the rug where the dog lay onV
But the reindeer skin was burnt in twoE
And the little black hound was goneW
-
And traced in the ashes these words he readX
For the soul of your firstborn sonT
I will make you rich as you once were richY
Ere the glass of your luck was runT
-
The Geraldine went to the west windowZ
And then he went to the eastS
And saw his desolate pasture fieldsA2
And the stables without a beastS
-
So be it as I love no womanT
No son shall ever be mineJ
I would that my stables were full of steedsB2
And my cellars were full of wineJ
-
I swear it as I love no womanT
And never a son have IC2
I would that my sheep and their little lambsD2
Should flourish and multiplyC2
-
So yours be the soul of my firstborn sonT
Here the Geraldine slyly smiledL
But from the dark of the lonely roomE2
Came the cry of a little childL
-
The Geraldine went to the west windowZ
He opened and out did leanF2
And lo the pastures were full of kineF2
All chewing the grass so greenF2
-
And quickly he went to the east windowZ
And his face was pale to seeH
For lo he saw to the empty stallsG2
Brave steeds go three by threeH
-
The Geraldine went to the great hall doorK
In wonder at what had beenF2
And there he saw the prettiest maidH2
That ever his eyes had seenF2
-
And long he looked at the pretty young maidH2
And swore there was none so fairG
And his heart went out of him like a houndR
And hers like a timid hareG
-
Each day he followed her up and downF2
And each night he could not restI2
Until at last the pretty young maidH2
Her love for him confessedI2
-
They wooed and they wed and the days went byC2
As quick as such good days willO
And at last came the cry of his firstborn sonF2
The cup of his joy to fillO
-
And the summer passed and the winter cameP
Right fair was the child to seeH
And he laughed at the shriek of a bitter stormJ2
As he sat on his father's kneeH
-
Who rings so loud at the Geraldine's gateK2
Who knocks so loud at the doorK
Now rise you up my pretty young wifeL2
For twice they have knocked beforeK
-
Quickly she opened the great hall doorK
And Welcome you in she criedN
But there only entered a little black houndR
And he would not be deniedN
-
When the Geraldine saw the little black dogM2
He rose with a fearful cryC2
I sold my child to the Devil's houndR
In forgotten days gone byC2
-
He drew his sword on the little black houndR
But it would not pierce its skinF2
He tried to pray but his lips were dumbN2
Because of his grievous sinF2
-
Then the fair young wife took the black hound's throatO2
Both her small white hands betweenF2
And he thought he saw one of God's angelsP2
Where his sweet young wife had beenF2
-
Then he thought he saw from God's spiritQ2
The hound go sore oppressedI2
But he woke to find his own dead wifeL2
With her dead child on her breastI2
-
Quickly he went to the west windowZ
Quickly he went to the eastS
No help in the desolate pasture fieldsA2
Or the stables that held no beastS
-
He flung himself at his white wife's sideN
And the dead lips moved and smiledL
Then came somewhere from the lonely roomE2
The laugh of a little childL
