IA
-
UNTIL her death ' the words read strange yet realB
Like things afar off suddenly brought nearC
Will it be slow or speedy full of fearC
Or calm as a spent day of peace idealB
IIA
-
Will her brown locks lie white on coffin pillowD
Will these her eyes that sometime were called sweetE
Close after years of dried up tears or meetE
Death's dust in midst of weeping And that billowD
-
IIIA
-
Her restless heart will it be stopped still heavingF
Or softly ebb 'neath age's placid breathG
Will it be lonely this mysterious deathG
Fit close unto her solitary livingF
-
IVH
-
A turning of her face to the wall nought spokenI
Exchanging this world's light for heaven's or willJ
She part in pain from warm love to the chillJ
Unknown pursued with cries of hearts half brokenI
-
VH
-
With fond lips felt through the blind mists of dyingF
And close arms clung to in the struggle vainK
Or these all past will death to her be gainK
Unto her life's long question God's replyingF
-
VIH
-
No more Within his hand divine as tenderL
He holds the mystic measure of her daysM
And be they few or many His the praiseM
In life or death her Keeper and DefenderL
-
VIIH
-
Then come He soon or late she will not fear HimN
Be her end lone or loveful she'll not grieveH
For He whom she believed in doth believeH
Will call her from the dust and she will hear HimN
