O SUDDEN blast that through this silence blackA
Sweeps past my windowsB
Coming and going with invisible trackA
As death or sin doesC
-
Why scare me lying sick and save thy ownD
Hearing no voicesC
Why mingle with a helpless human moanD
Thy mad rejoicesC
-
Why not come gently as good angels comeE
To souls departingF
Floating among the shadows of the roomG
With eyes light dartingF
-
Bringing faint airs of balm that seem to rouseC
Thoughts of a Far LandH
Then binding softly upon weary browsC
Death's poppy garlandI
-
O fearful blast I shudder at thy soundJ
Like heathen mortalK
Who saw the Three that mark life's doom d boundJ
Sit at his portalK
-
Thou mightst be laden with sad shrieking soulsC
Carried unwillingF
From their known earth to the unknown stream that rollsC
All anguish stillingF
-
Fierce wind will the Death angel come like theeL
Soon soon to bear meL
Whither what mysteries may unfold to meL
What terrors scare meL
-
Shall I go wand'ring on through empty spaceC
As on earth lonelyL
Or seek through myriad spirit ranks one faceC
And miss that onlyL
Shall I not then drop down from sphere to sphereM
Palsied and aimlessC
Or will my being change so that both fearM
And grief die namelessC
-
Rather I pray Him who Himself is LoveN
Out of whose essenceC
We all do spring and towards him tending moveO
Back to His presenceC
-
That even His brightness may not quite effaceC
The soul's earth featuresC
That the dear human likeness each may traceC
Glorified creaturesC
-
That we may not cease loving only taughtP
Holier desiringF
More faith more patience with more wisdom fraughtP
Higher aspiringF
-
That we may do all work we left undoneQ
Here though unmeetnessC
From height to height celestial passing onR
Towards full completenessC
-
Then strong Azrael be thy supreme callS
Soft as spring breezesC
Or like this blast whose loud fiend festivalK
My heart's blood freezesC
-
I will not fear thee If thou safely keepT
My soul God's givingF
And my soul's soul I wakening from death sleepT
Shall first know livingF
