The Temple in DarknessA
-
Darkness broods upon the templeB
Glooms along the lonely aislesC
Fills up all the orient windowD
Whence like little children s wilesC
Shadows purple azure goldenE
Broke upon the floor in smilesC
-
From the great heart of the organE
Bursts no voice of chant or psalmF
All the air by music pulsesG
Stirred no more is deathly calmH
And no precious incense risingI
Falls like good men s prayer in balmH
-
Not a sound of living footstepJ
Echoes on the marble floorK
Not a sigh of stranger passingI
Pierces through the clos d doorK
Quenched the light upon the altarL
Where the priest stood none stands moreK
-
Lord why hast Thou left Thy templeB
Scorned of man disowned by TheeM
Rather let Thy right hand crush itN
None its desolation seeM
List He who the temple buildedN
Doth His will there Let it beM
-
A Light in the TempleB
-
Lo a light within the templeB
Whence it cometh no man knowsO
Barred the doors the night black windowsO
Stand apart in solemn rowsO
All without seems gloom eternalB
Yet the glimmer comes and goesO
-
As if silent footed angelsP
Through the dim aisles wandered fairQ
Only traced amid the darknessA
By the glory in their hairQ
Till at the forsaken altarL
They all met and praised God thereQ
-
Now the light grows fuller clearerL
Hark the organ gins to soundN
Faint like broken spirit cryingI
Unto Heaven from the groundN
While the chorus of the angelsP
Mingles everywhere aroundN
-
See the altar shines all radiantN
Though no mortal priest there standsR
And no earthly congregationE
Worships with uplifted handsR
Yet they gather slow and saintlyM
In innumerable bandsR
-
And the chant celestial risesS
Where the human prayers have ceasedN
No tear sacrifice is offeredN
For all anguish is appeasedN
Through its night of desolationE
To His temple comes the PriestN
