Rhyme Scheme: ABAC ADAD EAFA GHGH IJIJ KDKD LMLMANAN OJOJDEEP set in distant seas it lies | A |
The morning vapors float and fall | B |
The noonday clouds above it rise | A |
Then drop as white as virgin's pall | C |
- | |
And sometimes when that shroud uplifts | A |
The far green fields show strange and fair | D |
Mute waterfalls in sliver rifts | A |
Sparkle adown the hillside bare | D |
- | |
But ah mists gather more and more | E |
And though the blue sky has no tears | A |
And the sea laughs with light all o'er | F |
The lovely Island disappears | A |
- | |
O vanished Island of the blest | G |
O dream of all things pure and high | H |
Hid in deep seas as faithful breast | G |
Hides loves that have but seemed to die | H |
- | |
Whether on seas dividing tossed | I |
Or led through fertile lands the while | J |
Better lose all things than have lost | I |
The memory of the morning Isle | J |
- | |
For lo when gloaming shadows glide | K |
And all is calm in earth and air | D |
Above the heaving of the tide | K |
The lonely Island rises fair | D |
- | |
Its purple peaks shine outlined grand | L |
And clear as noble lives nigh done | M |
While stretches bright from land to land | L |
The broad sea pathway to the sun | M |
He wraps it in his glory's blaze | A |
He stoops to kiss its forehead cold | N |
And all transfigured by his rays | A |
It gleams an Isle of molten gold | N |
- | |
The sun may set the shades descend | O |
Earth sleep and yet while sleeping smile | J |
But it will live unto life's end | O |
That vision of the Golden Isle | J |
