The Golden Island: Arran From Ayr Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC ADAD EAFA GHGH IJIJ KDKD LMLMANAN OJOJ

DEEP set in distant seas it liesA
The morning vapors float and fallB
The noonday clouds above it riseA
Then drop as white as virgin's pallC
-
And sometimes when that shroud upliftsA
The far green fields show strange and fairD
Mute waterfalls in sliver riftsA
Sparkle adown the hillside bareD
-
But ah mists gather more and moreE
And though the blue sky has no tearsA
And the sea laughs with light all o'erF
The lovely Island disappearsA
-
O vanished Island of the blestG
O dream of all things pure and highH
Hid in deep seas as faithful breastG
Hides loves that have but seemed to dieH
-
Whether on seas dividing tossedI
Or led through fertile lands the whileJ
Better lose all things than have lostI
The memory of the morning IsleJ
-
For lo when gloaming shadows glideK
And all is calm in earth and airD
Above the heaving of the tideK
The lonely Island rises fairD
-
Its purple peaks shine outlined grandL
And clear as noble lives nigh doneM
While stretches bright from land to landL
The broad sea pathway to the sunM
He wraps it in his glory's blazeA
He stoops to kiss its forehead coldN
And all transfigured by his raysA
It gleams an Isle of molten goldN
-
The sun may set the shades descendO
Earth sleep and yet while sleeping smileJ
But it will live unto life's endO
That vision of the Golden IsleJ
