LAY him beneath his snowsA
The great Norse giant who in these last daysB
Troubled the nations Gather decentlyC
The imperial robes about him 'T is but manD
This demi god Or rather it was manD
And is a little dust that will corruptE
As fast as any nameless dust which sleepsF
'Neath Alma's grass or Balaklava's vinesG
-
No vineyard grave for him No quiet tombH
By river margin where across the seasI
Children's fond thoughts and women's memories comeJ
Like angels to sit by the sepulchreK
Saying 'All these were men who knew to countL
Front faced the cost of honor nor did shrinkM
From its full payment coming here to dieN
They died like men '-
-
But this man Ah for himO
Funereal state and ceremonial grandP
The stone engraved sarcophagus and thenQ
OblivionR
-
Nay oblivion were as blissS
To that fierce howl which rolls from land to landP
Exulting 'Art thou fallen LuciferK
Son of the morning ' or condemning 'ThusS
Perish the wicked ' or blaspheming 'HereK
Lies our Belshazzar our SennacheribT
Our Pharaoh he whose heart God harden dC
So that he would not let the people go '-
-
Self glorifying sinners Why this manD
Was but like other men you Levite smallU
Who shut your saintly ears and prate of hellV
And heretics because outside church doorsS
Your church doors congregations poor and smallU
Praise Heaven in their own way you autocratW
Of all the hamlets who add field to fieldX
And house to house whose slavish children cowerK
Before your tyrant footstep you foul tonguedY
Fanatic or ambitious egotistZ
Who thinks God stoops from His high majestyC
To lay His finger on your puny headA2
And crown it that you henceforth may paradeB2
Your maggotship throughout the wondering worldC2
'I am the Lord's anointed '-
-
Fools and blindD2
This Czar this emperor this disthron d corpseS
Lying so straightly in an icy calmE2
Grander than sovereignty was but as yeC
No better and no worse Heaven mend us allU
-
Carry him forth and bury him Death's peaceS
Rest on his memory Mercy by his bierK
Sits silent or says only these few wordsS
'Let him who is without sin 'mongst ye allU
Cast the first stone '-
