SING away ay sing awayA
Merry little birdB
Always gayest of the gayA
Though a woodland roundelayC
You ne'er sung nor heardB
Though your life from youth to ageD
Passes in a narrow cageD
-
Near the window wild birds flyC
Trees are waving roundE
Fair things everywhere you spyC
Through the glass pane's mysteryF
Your small life's small boundE
Nothing hinders your desireG
But a little gilded wireG
-
Like a human soul you seemH
Shut in golden barsI
Placed amidst earth's sunshine streamH
Singing to the morning beamH
Dreaming 'neath the starsI
Seeing all life's pleasures clearJ
But they never can come nearJ
-
Never Sing bird poet mineK
As most poets doL
Guessing by an instinct fineK
At some happiness divineK
Which they never knewL
Lonely in a prison brightM
Hymning for the world's delightM
-
Yet my birdie you're contentN
In your tiny cageD
Not a carol thence is sentN
But for happiness is meantN
Wisdom pure as sageD
Teaching the true poet's partO
Is to sing with merry heartO
-
So lie down thou peevish penP
Eyes shake off all tearsQ
And my wee bird sing againP
I'll translate your song to menP
In these future yearsR
'Howsoe'er thy lot's assignedS
Bear it with a cheerful mind '-
