I NEVER lay me down to sleep at nightB
But in my heart I sing that little songC
The angels hear it as a pitying throngC
They touch my burning lids with fingers brightB
As moonbeams pale impalpable and lightB
And when my daily pious tasks are doneD
And all my patient prayers said one by oneD
God hears it Seems it sinful in His sightB
That round my slow burnt offering of quenched willE
One quivering human sigh creeps wind like stillE
That when my orisons celestial failF
Rises one note of natural human wailF
Dear lord spouse hero martyr saint erelongC
I trust God will forgive my singing that poor songC

A YEAR ago I bade my little sonD
Bear upon pilgrimage a heavy loadG
Of alms he cried half fainting on the roadG
'Mother O mother would the day were done '-
Him I reproved with tears and said 'Go onH
Nor pause nor murmur till thy task be o'er '-
Would not God say to me the same and moreI
I will not sing that song Thou dearest oneD
Husband no brother stretch thy steadfast handJ
And let mine grasp it Now I also standJ
My woman weakness nerved to strength like thineK
We'll quaff life's aloe cup as if 't were wineK
Each to the other journeying on apartL
Till at heaven's golden doors we two leap heart to heartL
