MY white archangel with thy steadfast eyesB
Beholding all this empty ghost filled roomC
Thy clasped hands resting on the sword of doomC
Thy firm close lips not made for human sighsB
Or smiles or kisses sweet or bitter criesB
But for divine exhorting holy songD
And righteous counsel bold from seraph tongueE
Beautiful angel strong as thou art wiseB
Would that the sight of thee made wise and strongD
Would that this sheath d sword of thine which liesB
Stonily idle could gleam out amongE
The spiritual hosts of enemiesF
That tempting shriek 'Requite thou wrong with wrong '-
Lama Sabachthani How long how longD

MICHAEL the leader of the hosts of GodG
Who warred with Satan for the body of himH
Whom living God had loved If cherubimH
With cherubim contended for one clodG
Of human dust for forty years that trodG
The gloomy desert of Heaven's chastisementG
Are there not ministering angels sentG
To battle with the devils that roam abroadG
Clutching our living souls 'The living stillI
The living they shall praise Thee ' Let some greatG
Invisible spirit enter in and fillI
The howling chambers of hearts desolateG
With looks like thine O Michael strong and wiseB
My white archangel with the steadfast eyesB
