THE thin white snow streaks pencillingA
That mountain's shoulder grayB
While in the west the pale green skyA
Smiled back the dawning dayB
Till from the misty east the sunC
Was of a sudden bornD
Like a new soul in ParadiseE
How long it seems since mornD
-
One little hour O round red sunC
And thou and I shall comeF
Unto the golden gate of restG
The open door of homeH
One little hour O weary sunC
Delay the threatened eveI
Till my tired feet that pleasant doorJ
Enter and never leaveI
-
Ye rooks that fly in slender fileK
Into the thick'ning gloomL
Ye'll scarce have reached your grim gray towerM
Ere I have reached my homeH
Plover that thrills the solitudeN
With such an eerie cryA
Seek you your nest ere night fall comesO
As my heart's nest seek IA
-
O light light heart and heavy feetP
Patience a little whileK
Keep the warm love light in these eyesQ
And on these lips the smileK
Out speed the mist the gathering mistR
That follows o'er the moorS
The darker grows the world withoutT
The brighter seems that doorJ
O door so close yet so far offU
O mist that nears and nearsV
What shall I faint in sight of homeH
Blinded but not with tearsW
'T is but the mist the cruel mistR
Which chills this heart of mineX
These eyes too weak to see that lightY
It has not ceased to shineX
-
A little further further yetZ
The white mist crawls and crawlsA2
It hems me around it shuts me inB2
Its great sepulchral wallsA2
No earth no sky no path no lightY
A silence like the tombL
O me it is too soon to dieA
And I was going homeH
-
A little further further yetZ
My limbs are young my heartC2
O heart it is not only lifeD2
That feels it hard to partC2
Poor lips slow freezing into calmE2
Numbed hands that helpless fallF2
And a mile off warm lips fond handsG2
Waiting to welcome allF2
-
I see the pictures in the roomL
The figures moving roundH2
The very flicker of the fireM
Upon the patterned groundH2
O that I were the shepherd dogA
That guards their happy doorJ
Or even the silly household catI2
That basks upon the floorJ
-
O that I sat one minute's spaceJ2
Where I have sat so longA
O that I heard one little wordK2
Sweeter than angel's songA
A pause and then the table fillsL2
The harmless mirth brims o'erM
While I O can it be God's willM2
I die outside the doorJ
-
My body fails my desperate soulN2
Struggles before it goA
The bleak air's full of voices wildO2
But not the voice I knowA
Dim shapes come wandering through the darkA
With mocking curious staresW
Faces long strange peer glimmering byA
But not one face of theirsW
-
Lost lost and such a little wayB
From that dear sheltering doorJ
Lost lost out of the loving armsP2
Left empty evermoreJ
His will be done O gate of heavenC
Fairer than earthly doorJ
Receive me Everlasting armsP2
Enfold me evermoreJ
-
And so farewellQ2
What is this touchR2
Upon my closing eyesQ
My name too that I thought to hearS2
Next time in ParadiseE
Warm arms close lips O saved saved savedT2
Across the deathly moorS
Sought found and yonder through the nightY
Shineth the blessed doorJ
