After War timeA
-
O LIFE dear life with sunbeam finger touchingB
This poor damp brow or flying freshly byC
On wings of mountain wind or tenderlyD
In links of visionary embraces clutchingB
Me from the yawning graveE
Can I believe thou yet hast power to saveE
-
I see thee O my life like phantom giantF
Stand on the hill top large against the dawnG
Upon the night black clouds a picture drawnG
Of aspect wonderful with hope defiantF
And so majestic grownH
I scarce discern the image as my ownH
-
Those mists furl off and through the vale resplendentF
I see the pathway of my years prolongI
Not without labor yet for labor strongI
Not without pain but pain whose touch transcendentF
By love's divinest lawsJ
Heart unto heart and all hearts upwards drawsJ
-
O life O love your diverse tones bewilderingB
Make silence like two meeting waves of soundK
I dream of wifely white arms lisp of childrenL
Never of ended warsM
Save kisses scaling honorable scarsN
-
No more of battles Save the combat gloriousO
To which all earth and heaven may witness standP
The sword of the Spirit taking in my handP
I shall go forth since in new fields victoriousO
The King yet grants that IC
His servant live or His good soldier dieC
