LABORARE est orareA
We black visaged sons of toilB
From the coal mine and the anvilC
And the delving of the soilB
From the loom the wharf the warehouseD
And the ever whirling millE
Out of grim and hungry silenceF
Raise a weak voice small and shrillE
Laborare est orareA
Man dost hear us God He willE
-
We who just can keep from starvingG
Sickly wives not always mildH
Trying not to curse Heaven's bountyI
When it sends another childH
We who worn out doze on SundaysJ
O'er the Book we strive to readK
Cannot understand the parsonL
Or the catechism and creedM
Laborare est orareA
Then good sooth we pray indeedM
-
We poor women feeble naturedN
Large of heart in wisdom smallO
Who the world's incessant battleC
Cannot understand at allO
All the mysteries of the churchesP
All the troubles of the stateQ
Whom child smiles teach 'God is loving '-
And child coffins 'God is great'Q
Laborare est orareA
We too at His footstool waitQ
-
Laborare est orareA
Hear it ye of spirit poorA
Who sit crouching at the thresholdQ
While your brethren force the doorA
Ye whose ignorance stands wringingG
Rough hands scamed with toil nor daresR
Lift so much as eyes to HeavenL
Lo all life this truth declaresR
Laborare est orareA
And the whole earth rings with prayersR
