RICHARD the Lion hearted crowned sereneB
With the true royalty of perfect manC
Seated in stone above the praise or banC
Of these mixed crowds who come gaping leanB
As if to see what the word 'king' might meanB
In those old times Behold what need that rimD
Of crown 'gainst this blue sky to signal himD
A monarch of the monarchs that have beenE
And perhaps are not Read his destiniesF
In the full brow o'er arching kingly eyesG
In the strong hands grasping both rein and swordH
In the close mouth so sternly beautifulI
Surely a man who his own spirit can ruleJ
Lord of himself therefore his brethren's lordH

'O Richard O mon roi ' So minstrels sighedK
The many centuried voice dies fast awayL
Amidst the turmoil of our modern dayL
How know we but these green wreathed legends hideK
An ugly truth that never could abideK
In this our living world's far purer airM
Nevertheless O statue rest thou thereM
Our Richard of all chivalry the prideK
Or if not the true Richard still a typeN
Of the old regal glory fallen o'er ripeN
And giving place to better blossomingO
Stand imaging the grand heroic daysP
And let our little children come and gazeP
Whispering with innocent awe 'This was a King '-
