WILLIE fold your little handsA
Let it drop that 'soldier' toyB
Look where father's picture standsA
Father who here kissed his boyB
Not two months since father kindC
Who this night may Never mindC
Mother's sob my Willie dearD
Call aloud that He may hearE
Who is God of battles sayF
'O keep father safe this dayF
By the Alma river 'G

Ask no more child Never heedH
Either Russ or Frank or TurkI
Right of nations or of creedH
Chance poised victory's bloody workI
Any flag i' the wind may rollJ
On thy heights SebastopolJ
Willie all to you and meK
Is that spot where'er it beK
Where he stands no other wordL
Stands God sure the child's prayer heardL
By the Alma riverM
-
Willie listen to the bellsN
Ringing through the town to dayF
That's for victory Ah no knellsN
For the many swept awayF
Hundreds thousands Let us weepO
We who need not just to keepO
Reason steady in my brainP
Till the morning comes againQ
Till the third dread morning tellJ
Who they were that fought and fellJ
By the Alma riverM
-
Come we'll lay us down my childR
Poor the bed is poor and hardS
Yet thy father far exiledR
Sleeps upon the open swardT
Dreaming of us two at homeU
Or beneath the starry domeU
Digs out trenches in the darkV
Where he buries Willie markV
Where he buries those who diedW
Fighting bravely at his sideW
By the Alma riverM
-
Willie Willie go to sleepO
God will keep us O my boyB
He will make the dull hours creepO
Faster and send news of joyB
-
When I need not shrink to meetX
Those dread placards in the streetX
Which for weeks will ghastly stareY
In some eyes Child sy thy prayerY
Once again a different oneZ
Say 'O God Thy will be doneZ
By the Alma river '-
