O SOLITARY shining seaA
That ripples in the sunB
O gray and melancholy seaA
O'er which the shadows runB
-
O many voiced and angry seaA
Breaking with moan and strainC
I like a humble chastened childD
Come back to thee againE
-
And build child castles and dig moatsF
Upon the quiet sandsG
And twist the cliff convolvulusG
Once more round idle handsG
-
And look across that ocean lineH
As o'er life's summer seaG
Where many a hope went sailing onceG
Full set with canvas freeG
-
Strange strange to think how some of themI
Their silver sails have furledD
And some have whitely glided downJ
Into the under worldD
-
And some dismasted tossed and tornK
Put back in port once moreL
Thankful to ride with freight still safeM
At anchor near the shoreL
-
Stranger it is to lie at easeG
As now with thoughts that flyN
More light and wandering than sea birdsG
Between the waves and skyN
-
To play child's play with shells and weedsG
And view the ocean grandD
Sunk to one wave that may submergeO
A baby house of sandD
-
And not once look or look by chanceG
With old dreams quite supprestD
Across that mystic wild sea worldD
Of infinite unrestD
-
O ever solitary seaG
Of which we all have foundD
Somewhat to dream or say the typeP
Of things without a boundD
-
Love long as life and strong as deathQ
Faith humble as sublimeR
Eternity whose large depths holdD
The wrecks of this small TimeR
-
Unchanging everlasting seaG
To spirits soothed and calmS
Thy restless moan of other yearsG
Becomes an endless psalmT
