Down down like a pale leaf droppingA
Under an autumn skyB
My love dropped into my bosomC
Quietly quietlyD
-
There was not a ray of sunshineE
And not a sound in the airF
As she trembled into my bosomC
My love no longer fairF
-
All year round in her beautyD
She dwelt on the tree top highB
She danced in the summer breezesG
She laughed to the summer skyB
-
I lay so low in the grass dewsH
She sat so high aboveI
She never wist of my longingA
She never dreamed of my lifeJ
-
But when winds lay bare her dwellingA
And her heart could find no restK
I called and she fluttered downwardL
Into my faithful breastK
-
I know that my love is fadingA
I know I cannot foldM
Her fragrance from the frost blightN
Her beauty from the mouldM
-
But a little little longerO
She shall contented lieB
And wither away in the sunshineE
Silently silentlyD
-
Come when thou wilt grim WinterO
My year is crowned and blestK
If when my love is dyingA
She die upon my breastK
