C N Died AprilA
-
What spirit is it that doth pervadeB
The silence of this empty roomC
And as I lift my eyes what shadeB
Glides off and vanishes in gloomC
-
I could believe this moment goneD
A known form filled that vacant chairE
That those kind eyes upon me shoneF
I never shall see anywhereE
-
The living are so far awayG
But thou thou seemest strangely nearH
Knowest all my silent heart would sayG
Its peace its pain its hope its fearH
-
And from thy calm supernal heightI
And wondrous wisdom newly wonJ
Smilest on all our poor delightI
And petty woe beneath the sunJ
-
From all this coil thou hast slipped awayG
As softly as a cloud departsK
Along the hillside purple grayG
Into the heaven of patient heartsK
-
Nothing here suffered nothing missedL
Will ever stir from its reposeM
The death smile on her lips unkissedL
Who all things loves and all things knowsM
-
And I who ignorant and weakN
Of love so helpless quick to painO
With restless longing ever seekN
The unattainable in vainO
-
Find it strange comfort thus to sitL
While the loud world unheeded rollsP
And clasp ere yet the fancy flitL
A friend's hand from the land of soulsP
