What spirit is it that doth pervade | B |
The silence of this empty room | C |
And as I lift my eyes what shade | B |
Glides off and vanishes in gloom | C |
- | |
I could believe this moment gone | D |
A known form filled that vacant chair | E |
That those kind eyes upon me shone | F |
I never shall see anywhere | E |
- | |
The living are so far away | G |
But thou thou seemest strangely near | H |
Knowest all my silent heart would say | G |
Its peace its pain its hope its fear | H |
- | |
And from thy calm supernal height | I |
And wondrous wisdom newly won | J |
Smilest on all our poor delight | I |
And petty woe beneath the sun | J |
- | |
From all this coil thou hast slipped away | G |
As softly as a cloud departs | K |
Along the hillside purple gray | G |
Into the heaven of patient hearts | K |
- | |
Nothing here suffered nothing missed | L |
Will ever stir from its repose | M |
The death smile on her lips unkissed | L |
Who all things loves and all things knows | M |
- | |
And I who ignorant and weak | N |
Of love so helpless quick to pain | O |
With restless longing ever seek | N |
The unattainable in vain | O |
- | |
Find it strange comfort thus to sit | L |
While the loud world unheeded rolls | P |
And clasp ere yet the fancy flit | L |
A friend's hand from the land of souls | P |
