REST rest four little letters one short wordA
Enfolding an infinitude of blissB
Rest is upon the earth The heavy cloudsC
Hang poised in silent ether motionlessD
Seeking nor sun nor breeze No restless starE
Thrills the sky's gray robed breast with pulsing raysF
The night's heart has throbbed outG
No grass blade stirsH
No downy wing d moth comes flittering byI
Caught by the light Thank God there is no lightJ
No open eyed loud voiced quick motioned lightJ
Nothing but gloom and restK
A row of treesL
Along the hill horizon westward standsM
All black and still as if it were a rankN
Of fallen angels melancholy metO
Before the amber gate of ParadiseP
The bright shut gate whose everlasting smileQ
Deadens despair to calmR
O better farE
Better than bliss is rest If suddenlyS
Those burnished doors of molten gold steel barredT
Which the sun closed behind him as he wentU
Into his bridal chamber were to burstV
Asunder with a clang and in a breathW
God's mysteries were revealed His kingdom cameX
The multitudes of heavenly messengersH
Hastening throughout all space the thunder quireY
Of praise the obedient lightnings' lambent gleamZ
Around the unseen Throne should I not sinkA2
Crushed by the weight of such beatitudesH
Crying 'Rest only rest thou merciful GodB2
Hide me within the hollow of Thy handC2
In some dark corner of the universeH
Thy bright full busy universe that blindsH
Deafens and tortures Give me only rest 'D2
-
O for a soul sleep long and deep and stillE2
To lie down quiet after the weary dayF2
Dropping all pleasant flowers from the numbed handsH
Bidding good night to all companions dearG2
Drawing the curtains on this darkened worldH2
Closing the eyes and with a patient sighI
Murmuring 'Our Father' fall on sleep till dawnI2
