A Psalm For New Year-s Eve Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDD EFEFEGG HIHIHI JKJKJLL MIMIMFF ININIOOA FRIEND stands at the door | A |
In either tight closed hand | B |
Hiding rich gifts three hundred and three score | A |
Waiting to strew them daily o'er the land | B |
Even as seed the sower | C |
Each drops he treads it in and passes by | D |
It cannot be made fruitful till it die | D |
- | |
O good New Year we clasp | E |
This warm shut hand of thine | F |
Loosing forever with half sigh half gasp | E |
That which from ours falls like dead fingers' twine | F |
Ay whether fierce its grasp | E |
Has been or gentle having been we know | G |
That it was blessed let the Old Year go | G |
- | |
O New Year teach us faith | H |
The road of life is hard | I |
When our feet bleed and scourging winds us scathe | H |
Point thou to Him whose visage was more marred | I |
Than any man's who saith | H |
'Make straight paths for your feet' and to the opprest | I |
'Come ye to Me and I will give you rest ' | - |
- | |
Yet hang some lamp like hope | J |
Above this unknown way | K |
Kind year to give our spirits freer scope | J |
And our hands strength to work while it is day | K |
But if that way must slope | J |
Tombward O bring before our fading eyes | L |
The lamp of life the Hope that never dies | L |
- | |
Comfort our souls with love | M |
Love of all human kind | I |
Love special close in which like sheltered dove | M |
Each weary heart its own safe nest may find | I |
And love that turns above | M |
Adoringly contented to resign | F |
All loves if need be for the Love Divine | F |
- | |
Friend come thou like a friend | I |
And whether bright thy face | N |
Or dim with clouds we cannot comprehend | I |
We'll hold out patient hands each in his place | N |
And trust thee to the end | I |
Knowing thou leadest onwards to those spheres | O |
Where there are neither days nor months nor years | O |
