A Psalm For New Year-s Eve Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDD EFEFEGG HIHIHI JKJKJLL MIMIMFF ININIOO

A FRIEND stands at the doorA
In either tight closed handB
Hiding rich gifts three hundred and three scoreA
Waiting to strew them daily o'er the landB
Even as seed the sowerC
Each drops he treads it in and passes byD
It cannot be made fruitful till it dieD
-
O good New Year we claspE
This warm shut hand of thineF
Loosing forever with half sigh half gaspE
That which from ours falls like dead fingers' twineF
Ay whether fierce its graspE
Has been or gentle having been we knowG
That it was blessed let the Old Year goG
-
O New Year teach us faithH
The road of life is hardI
When our feet bleed and scourging winds us scatheH
Point thou to Him whose visage was more marredI
Than any man's who saithH
'Make straight paths for your feet' and to the opprestI
'Come ye to Me and I will give you rest '-
-
Yet hang some lamp like hopeJ
Above this unknown wayK
Kind year to give our spirits freer scopeJ
And our hands strength to work while it is dayK
But if that way must slopeJ
Tombward O bring before our fading eyesL
The lamp of life the Hope that never diesL
-
Comfort our souls with loveM
Love of all human kindI
Love special close in which like sheltered doveM
Each weary heart its own safe nest may findI
And love that turns aboveM
Adoringly contented to resignF
All loves if need be for the Love DivineF
-
Friend come thou like a friendI
And whether bright thy faceN
Or dim with clouds we cannot comprehendI
We'll hold out patient hands each in his placeN
And trust thee to the endI
Knowing thou leadest onwards to those spheresO
Where there are neither days nor months nor yearsO
