Oor Jock's gude mither's second manA
At banes was unco skillyB
It cam' by heirskep frae an auntC
Leeb Tod o' Nether TillieB
An' when he thocht to sough awa'D
He sent for Jock ay did heB
An' wulled him the bane doctorin'A
Wi' a' the lave o's smiddyB
-
A braw doon settin' 'twas for JockE
An' for a while it paid himF
For wi's great muckle nieves like mellsG
He pit in banes wi' smeddumF
Ay mony a bane he snappit inA
At elbuck thee an' shoutherH
Gin ony wouldna gang his gaitI
Jock dang them a' to pootherH
-
Noo smiddy wark's a droothy jobJ
Sae whiles Jock wat his whustleB
When wi' a horse shoe or a baneA
He'd held some unco tussleB
But even though miracklous whilesG
It mattered nane whativerH
For whaur's the body disna kenA
A drucken doctor's cliverH
-
Ae nicht when Jock was gey weel onA
An' warslin' wi' some shoein'A
They brocht a bane case intil himF
That proved puir Jock's undoin'A
A cadger wi' an auld cork legK
An' fou as Jock or fouerH
Wha swore that o' his lower limbF
He'd fairly lost the pooerH
-
Jock fin's the leg an' shaks his heidL
Syne tells the man richt solemnA
Your knee pan's slippit up your theeB
Aside your spinal columnA
But gin ye'll tak a seat owre hereH
An' lat them haud ye ticht manA
I'se warrant for a quart o' beerH
I'll quickly hae ye richt manA
-
Jock yokit noo wi' rale guid wullB
To better the condeetionA
While Corkie swore he had his legK
Ca'd a' to crockaneetionA
Jock banned the lamp 'twas in his eenA
An' deaved wi' Corkie's granin'A
Quo' he Gin ye'll pit oot the lichtM
I'll gey sune pit the bane inA
-
Oot went the licht Jock got his grupN
He yarkit an' he ruggitM
He doobled up puir Corkie's legK
Syne strauchtened it an' tuggitM
An' while that baith the twa o' themF
Were sayin' some orra wordiesG
Auld Corkie's leg wi' hauf o's breeksG
Cam' clean aff at the hurdiesG
-
Jock swat wi' fear an' in the darkO
He crep' attour the smiddyM
For weel a wat he thocht his warkP
Would land him on the widdyM
An' wi' the leg he ran till's hooseG
Just half way doon the clachanA
His cronies oxterin' Corkie ootM
An' nearly deein' o' lauchin'A
-
But at Jock's door they stude an hourH
An' vainly kicked an' knockitM
Sin' Jock in a' the fear o' deathQ
Had got it barred an' lockitM
An' 'twas na till the neist forenuneA
They fand the leg weel hiddenA
For Jock was oot afore daylichtM
An' stuck it in the middenA
-
This feenished Jock an' efter han'A
He buckled til his ain warkP
For sune a' owre the kintra sideM
They kent aboot his bane warkP
An' hoo a law wer fleggit JockE
At Corkie's instigationA
An' gart him pay a five pun' noteM
By way o' compensationA
-
Ne sutor ultra crepidamF
Is gude enough for maist o'sG
For aye there's wark that's bude to getM
The better o' the best o'sG
An' just as doctors canna shoeR
Or haud a hin' leg stiddyM
Ye needa seek for surgeryM
Inside a country smiddyM
