Preface Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBD EFFFG HIFIJ KLKLI

Not mine to let the hair grow long and talkA
In raptured accents of the Higher ThingsB
Of all the purple Polyanthus bearsC
And beating wingsB
Oh no Nothing of that sortD
-
Ne'er have I languished on the lower slopesE
Of sweet Parnassus in the thrice dead yearsF
Chanting in fathoms of the fathomlessF
To kindred earsF
Certainly not No time for itG
-
Nor mine the gift O gilded gift and grandH
To linger near the murmur of the NineI
To mouth in music of the meaninglessF
Nay Never mineI
That's so QuiteJ
-
But here to han'le the auld crambo clinkK
On hame owre themes weel kent by Galen's tribeL
Regairdless o' what ither fowk may thinkK
Or ca' the scribeL
Ay That's aboot it nooI
