As I enter the theatre the play is going onA
I hear the father say to the son on stageB
You ve taken the motor apartC
The son replies The roof is leakingD
The father retorts The tire is flatE
Tiptoeing down the aisle I find my seatF
edge my way in across a dozen kneecapsG
as I tremble for my sanityH
I have heard doomed voices calling on god the electrodeI
Sure enough as I start to sitJ
a scream rises from beneath meH
It is one of the playersK
If I come down I ll break his neckL
caught between the seat and the backrestM
Now the audience and the players on stageB
their heads turned towards me are waitingD
for the sound of the break Must IN
Those in my aisle nod slowly reading my mindO
their eyes fixed on me and I understandP
that each has done the sameQ
Must I kill this man as the price of my admissionR
to this play His screams continue loud and longS
I am at a loss as to what to doT
I panic I freezeU
-
-
My training has been to eat the flesh of pigV
I might even have been able to slit a throatW
As a child I witnessed the dead chickensX
over a barrel of sawdust absorbing their bloodY
I then brought them in a bag to my fatherZ
who sold them across his counter Liking himA2
I learned to like people and enjoy their company tooT
which of course brought me to this playB2
But how angry I becomeC2
Now everybody is shouting at me to sit downD2
sit down or I ll be thrown outE2
The father and son have stepped off stageB
and come striding down the aisle side by sideF2
They reach me grab me by the shoulderZ
and force me down I scream I screamG2
as if to cover the sound of the neck breakingD
-
-
All through the play I screamG2
and am invited on stage to take a bowH2
I lose my senses and kick the actors in the teethI2
-
-
There is more laughterZ
and the actors acknowledge my performance with a bowH2
How should I understand thisJ2
Is it to say that if I machine gun the theatreZ
from left to right they will respond with applauseK2
that would only gradually diminish with each deathL2
I wonder then whether logically I should kill myselfM2
too out of admiration A question indeedN2
as I return to my seat and observe a new actO2
of children playfully aiming their kicksP2
at each other s groinsQ2
