Melpomene In Manhattan Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKKLMNL

As she walked she would look backA
over her shoulder and tripB
upon sidewalk cracks or bumpC
into people to whom she would apologizeD
profusely her head still turnedE
One could hear her murmur to herselfF
tearfully as though filled with a yearningG
to recover what she was leaving behindH
as if she would preserve itI
or do for it what she had neglectedJ
out of ignorance or oversightK
or from sheer meanness and spiteK
or simple helplessness to do betterL
her voice beginning to keenM
as she tripped or steered blindlyN
into the gutterL
