Here in bed behind a brick wall	A
I can make order and meaning	B
but how do I begin How do I	C
emerge without panic	D
to the sounds and mass	E
of people in the street	F

Are they human who stare	G
as I pass by as if sizing me up	H
for a mugging or a filthy proposition	I
and am I human to have to be	J
frightened and on guard	K
	-
It's people I'm afraid of afraid	L
of my own kind knowing their angers	M
and schemes and violent needs knowing	B
through knowledge of myself	N
that I have learned to resist	O
but when I can't I have seen	P
the havoc I have made	L
	-
It's this knowing their desperate motives	Q
as I have known mine I'm afraid of	R
in them I hide upon a bed	S
behind a brick wall and listen	I
to engines roaring up and down	T
the street and to voices shouting	B
to one another and find no meaning	B
or order in them as there is none	I
in me when I am free of self restraint	U

The bed is my victory over fear	V
The bed returns me to my self	N
as I was young and dreaming	B
of the beauty of the trees	W
and faces of people	X
